As Thérèse grew older, she was given a room of her own—an attic room which had been Pauline’s studio. It overlooked the garden, and the nearby park could be seen from its window. She arranged it to suit her own tastes, with the result, as she says, that it looked like a crowded bazaar full of pious objects and curiosities along with a garden and an aviary. On one wall hung a big, black wooden cross and some drawings. A basket decorated with muslin and red ribbon held flowers against another wall. A photograph of Pauline at the age of ten hung alone on a third wall. A table stood beneath, and on it was a spacious birdcage whose inhabitants nearly deafened visitors with their twittering. A white table held her books and a statue of Our Lady, honored with vases of flowers and candles. Scattered around were little baskets made of shells and cardboard boxes. Flowerpots hung outside the window and there was a stand inside the room for her favorite flowers. Before the main window stood her own personal table with a green cover on which she had a small statue of St. Joseph, an hourglass, a watchcase, an inkstand, and some flower vases.

The room also had a few ramshackle chairs and a doll’s cot which had belonged to Pauline. It was in this room that she and Céline spent hours together. “What lovely talks we had every evening,” Thérèse says. “Gazing into the distance we saw the pale moon swim slowly up above the trees, bathing a sleeping world in its silver light. The stars glittered in the dark blue of the sky across which the clouds drifted in the evening breeze—it all lifted our souls towards Heaven … it seems to me that we were granted graces of the kind given to great saints and graces such as those had to bear abundant fruit. To be good became easy and natural to us.”
